Speech & debate
Competitive forensics has shaped how I think, communicate, and solve problems under pressure. Through research-heavy debates and dynamic speech categories, I develop structured arguments, express complex concepts simply, and cultivate adaptive public speaking skills.
Policy Debate
I started Policy Debate in sixth grade. Learning to understand complex policies and build clear, evidence-based arguments took a lot of research and practice. At the 2024 Cal Invitational at UC Berkeley, my partner and I won three rounds against high school teams. Debate has helped me become a stronger researcher, quicker thinker, and more confident communicator, while also teaching me the value of preparation and teamwork.
Speech
While continuing with debate, I challenged myself to try speech as well, including Informative Speaking and Humorous Interpretation. Speech has helped me become more expressive, confident, and comfortable presenting ideas to an audience. It has also taught me how to organize a message clearly and adjust my delivery for different purposes. In Informative Speaking, I earned 3rd place in the Novice Final at the Claremont Bargain Belt tournament.
SPAR
I also compete in SPAR (Spontaneous Argumentation), which challenges me to think quickly with very little preparation. It has helped me become more flexible, confident, and comfortable responding to unexpected topics. I especially enjoy the fast pace and the challenge of organizing my thoughts clearly under pressure.
Finding My Voice
Speech and debate have taught me to think quickly, listen carefully, and express my ideas with confidence. I want to keep challenging myself with new topics, new audiences, and new ways of communicating.
